2000-2001 Executive Board

Josie Garro
President
Josie Garro
Hello, My name is Josie Garro, and my husband's name is Javier. We come from two different cultures. I'm Mexican-American and a native of California Javier is Spanish Basque born in the Pyreness region of Spain. Both our children have had the opportunity of being part of both cultures. Our daughter Stephanie is 22 years old and Tony is 20 years old. Tony was the surviving premature twin that weighed 1 lb. 14 oz. and was 12 inches long. Tony is hearing and visually impaired with mild CP and has a learning disability. Through all of Tony's life our family has been a support for him. As all families our life has been like a roller coaster ride, unexpected highs and lows and usually a wild ride. Getting it all together isn't easy. That's one of the reasons I'm a true believer in parent groups. We're each other advocates. Through involvement in PFA and other organizations, I've had the privilege of meeting many professionals, educators, and especially parents that have become my dear friends. PFA has come along way, and I hope parents support every staff individual employed by California School for the Blind, especially our PFA Board. Through involvement and sharing of ideas Without PFA our students won't have the opportunity to be involved in extracurricular activities. As most of you know this will be my last year on the PFA Board. I hope many new parents and friends will come join and support Parents and Friends Association. Sincerely, Josie Garro

Hello. My name is Maryann McBee, along with my Husband, Greg, We are the proud parents of a 10 year old little girl named Lauren. Lauren is a happy, loving child and very social. Lauren is totally blind due to ROP (retinopathy of prematurity), and is nonverbal also due to being born very prematurely at 25 weeks. Since coming to CSB, Lauren has made many advances and is surely moving in the right direction. It has never been easy facing every new challenge, but as a Family we face them together with our faith in ourselves, CSB,Parents and Friends Association, and many professionals who have helped to make our road a little smoother, so that we have the strength to tackle every new challenge. Together anything is possible

Marietta Tipton
My name is Marietta Tipton. Our son Allen is the youngest of 5 children, and is a CSB student. Having a handicapped child brings you out of the world of routine parenting to challenge you to become more then you ever thought you could. It also allows you to meet the most exceptional people who are not only caring and supportive but often inspirational as well. I've been a volunteer mom for about 14 years now. The pay is lousy but there's a great deal of job satisfaction. Winning a child's happy smile is like winning a medal. Join us and find out for yourself!

Married for 21 years, Bob and I have a total of five children ranging in ages 24-13 yrs. Four boys and one girl! I've worked as a registered nurse for the past 20 years and currently work for Kaiser Permanente Hospital in the Intensive Care Nursery in Sacramento. Our son, Justin has been a student at CSB for the past five years and I am currently the secretary for the Parents & Friends Association at the California School for the Blind. Being an active parent with children in different school districts has been challenging over the years but it was important for me to keep informed of what was going on in their schools.
Nedra Bell, Parent Liaison
Parent Liaison
Nedra Bell
My name is Nedra Bell. I am currently the Parents and Friends Liason, coordinator for the student store, counselor in the Southridge dorm and advisor for the CSB Student Council. I came to the school in 1980 when it moved from Berkeley. I worked for a year, left, and returned in 1984, and have been here since. I really enjoy the students and working with them. Each year I return I'm faced with new and exciting challenges, and that is what keeps me coming back year after year. I knew very early in my life that working with young people was my calling in life. Over the years I have helped raise hundreds of children and my wish is that I have had a positive influence in at least one life. I do feel that each child had definitely touched my life in some way, and I am a better person because of it.
