Our Story
At the height of the Cold War, in 1982, Kids Meeting Kids held the first
meeting of Soviet and American children. The kids talked about themselves
and about what they could do as kids help to make this a better and safer
world. Other meetings followed. More children became involved. The first penpal
exchange was developed in 1984 and now more than 40,000 children from all
over the US and the former USSR are writing to one another. A peace exchange
was also begun with children visiting between the two countries. An International
Children's Summit was held in June, 1988 to coincide with and be a part of
the U.N. Special Session on Disarmament. Then, a Second International Children's
Summit was held in November, 1989 to deal with the U.N. Covention on the Rights
of a Child. And in September 1990, kids met from 140 different countries to
consider the needs of children and share ideas with International leaders
at their World Summit for Children. Now yearly, International Congresses are
held. We work to improve children's rights in the world and for the ratification
and enforcement of The UN Convention. Most recently, we have been working
against violence through workshops, walks, vigils, and International Congresses.
We work locally, nationally, and internationally to bring peace and fairness
to all kids.
